Whew, not enough time in the day for all of the writing and blogging and extra meh that I do on a daily basis. Been busy busy busy with work for Fallen Comics ( quick shout out to Robbie and Mike, hoping that Mike gets better very soon), and moderating Facebook pages, promoting, applying for 9-5 jobs, taking care of my very co-dependent Bruiser dog, and battling the flu and depression. Pretty busy indeed. I have been unable to find one of my old notebooks to get all of that work posted here digitally before it is lost forever; but the search continues. I know it can’t be very many places, so it has to be safe. It just proves to be elusive and wants to be well hidden for now.

Walking Bruiser, we came across a very unfriendly gato. Bruiser was raised with cats and consistently thinks they all will be friendly and want to play. Most cats are, well cat sized. He is not.

Bruiser Chilling

So the cat decides that Bruiser is going to attempt to eat him, Bruiser wants to kiss and make up, cat shackles up. Swat on the nose with perfunctorily hissing and menacing appearance. Bruiser whimpers in defeat and off to the next bush to pee on. I feel for him. It isn’t easy being perceived a menace when you aren’t. It isn’t easy being stereotyped because of your breed, or appearance. Too many are oh so quick to judge, but get all pissed when they are judged in return. At least animals have the decency to let bygones be bygones and quickly move to the next order of business without remorse, regret, or any grudges.

In closing, for now; please support the arts. Show some love to the kind hard working creatives in your life or circles of life. Stop by the Fallen Comics website and even look them up on Facebook. I know this blog is a drop in the ocean of blogs in the platitudes of creative iconoclasts and trendsetters, free thinkers and boat rockers. Show some love by spreading the word. Sign up your email if you choose. ( I don’t like to spam people by sending them out by surprise. If you take the step to sign up, then I never forced you. ) But share, share, share. Don’t let a gato smack you on the nose…but if one does, walk away with humility and dignity, and move to the next enterprise with your spirit intact. 🙂 ~H.O.o.S.

With the day dwindling, and my lifeboat splashing against the rocks of doubt, uncertainty, and dashed hope…this was so touching; I had to share.
~May it fill you with emotion and wake the thoughtful mind as it did mine. I cry for relevance in frequency of a cloudburst.

And Now for Something Completely Different

The Goodbye

It was time.  I walked in, your wife, your best friend, your lover.  You had been cleaned up, tubes removed, hair combed, fresh gown.  I was able to hold you and kiss you, to say goodbye.  To ask your forgiveness for letting you go.  To tell you how much I loved you and always would.  To tell you about everything good and wonderful we had together, and to talk of all we had done, and what we had meant to each other.  I did all the talking; I don’t know if you were aware of my voice or were able to hear what I said, or even know I was there and feel my arms around you and be aware of my presence.  Were you present or were you already gone to whatever next plane of existence does, or does not, exist?  An hour went by, the longest…

All that you touch
All that you see
All that you taste
All you feel
All that you love
All that you hate
All you distrust
All you save
All that you give
All that you deal
All that you buy beg, borrow or steal
All you create
All you destroy
All that you do
All that you say
All that you eat everyone you meet
All that you slight everyone you fight
All that is now
All that is gone
All that’s to come
And everything under the sun is in tune
But the sun is eclipsed by the moon.
“There is no dark side of the moon really.
Matter of fact it’s all dark.”(spoken)
Heartbeat fades in to close album

The Darkside of the Moon, 1973, Pink Floyd

This was my first experience with Floyd, and it quickly became an obsession. Darkside has become an anthem, much like The Wall. However, if one goes back to earlier than Darkside and really listens to the Syd Barret Floyd you will see the connects. Sadly, most Floyd fans don’t ever listen to the albums before Darkside; and they are admittedly more difficult to find, and really digest. Most stick to The Wall, but miss even the flow of Floyd after Roger Waters left the group.

This band is so emotional for me. It is the only band I ever wanted to see whole, and was denied. My wife Mary Brewer took me last year to see Roger perform The Wall for it’s 30th Anniversary tour. It was better than I ever could have imagined. To be able to see even Roger was a massive blessing. He will never know what Pink Floyd means to me. Most people won’t.  It is a link to my now deceased mother. It is music that drives and pushes the spirit, at least mine. The more contemporary link is most anything that Maynard James Keenan has produced.
Back to PF for a moment, there is such a giant connection, even at a laser light show; where the music becomes center stage. The band wasn’t always known for making music out of practically nothing…they weren’t as well known for pushing boundaries and creating sounds that weren’t ever done…and they did it all with harmony. That ebb and flow that is essential for the connection.
I urge anyone reading who hasn’t had much experience with Pink Floyd to step away from the popular culture of Floyd and to delve deeper into the music, into the pathos. I am sure that now most of the older music especially can be listened to via YouTube. There might even be messages explaining meaning and such…but the Harmony and Lyrics are deeper than one glance gleans.
Most of all, if you ever get to listen to most of the music, listen with good headphones, because that is where the real magic lies. Feed your head. Let the music swirl and dance within your ears and headspace. Allow yourself a vacation in true music that hasn’t become all about the money, allow yourself a journey in emotional stages and let the music play.

“A movement is accomplished in six stages
And the seventh brings return…”
~Chapter 24 The Piper at the Gates of Dawn Pink Floyd

The WordPress.com Blog

At WordPress.com, our mission is making publishing democratic — accessible and easy for anyone, anywhere. And while anyone can start a free blog here, not everyone can access upgrades (like going ad-free or enabling custom design) because of limits on traditional payment networks.

Today, that changes: you can now buy WordPress.com upgrades with bitcoins.

PayPal alone blocks access from over 60 countries, and many credit card companies have similar restrictions. Some are blocked for political reasons, some because of higher fraud rates, and some for other financial reasons. Whatever the reason, we don’t think an individual blogger from Haiti, Ethiopia, or Kenya should have diminished access to the blogosphere because of payment issues they can’t control. Our goal is to enable people, not block them.

Bitcoin is a digital currency that enables instant payments over the internet. Unlike credit cards and PayPal, Bitcoin has no central authority and…

The Nautilus [draft 3.4]

Work in Progress

(My phone won’t let me copy and paste the link properly)

The above link points to a short story that I have worked on for the CyberKnights R.P.G. forums. CyberKnights RPG is a open Beta Android RPG game reminiscent of ShadowRun for the Genesis/SNES and earlier game types. It is still being currently worked on and updated frequently. I highly recommend the game for a few reasons. A) There are no permissions for the .apk download. B) The game is full of great CyberPunk gameplay C) While it isn’t the prettiest game you will find on your Android device it is massively deep. D) as it is Open Beta, it is still being worked on continuously. E) The forums will provide a wealth of information and help F) The Developers are on the forums and will not only answer you, but may take your suggestions and add them to the game. G) A storyline is being developed as you read this. CyberPunk is one of my biggest literary weaknesses. Call it our current race towards Futurism and constant need to be connected. FYI, there is a Necromancer movie coming soon. We can all thank Gibson, and the many other CyberPunk writers before me for laying down the foundation…and while many thought that CP (not to be confused with child porn) was dead, the new social networking / smartphone /connectivity issues we are all dealing with presently have and will bring about a resurgence for CyberPunk. …Mark my words… As for The Nautilus, please leave a comment or two. It seems the story has gotten away from me lately, and while this is a draft, it needs to be reigned in to short story length and breadth or expanded to novella standards.

Someone help…part 1 of?

I do not have access to a regular PC or laptop, and outside of my DROID 3 smartphone (which is what I use to type, research, source together, and post my witty meaningless drivel from) my browser on my PS3 has been getting really slow Wi-fi connections which hinders it further…

The current thing I need help on is WordPress, in general. I am somewhat new to it, and had a rough time setting it up as it is. What am I missing? What should I do to make it more complete? What do I do to make it more user and reader friendly?
And how do I change my little thumbnail picture for when I post comments? ( I have seen the thumbnail that is there…and I never chose it. If I can see it correctly, it really bothers me as to what it is and needs to be changed immediately )

Please post comments as I am asking for feedback and need the community help to get these things ironed out.

Thanks, H.O.o.S

Diminishing returns in the customer service line of life.

I feel bad, on more than a few levels. I think I am coming down with the flu. I haven’t been writing as much as I want to, would like to, or have the creative energies to do so on the projects that are supposed to fill my time. I’ve been hit with the depression bug, the I-can’t-seem-to-find-any-other-work bug, the writer’s block bug, the rejection bug…
Someone call in a medic.
I had assumed, (yeah you know the clichĂ© on that word) that publicizing on Facebook would generate more possible page views. Apparently of the 500 some-odd friends I have, there have had more reads from other bloggers on WordPress. I know that my FB account is for networking just as much as trolling for stupid or funny things to waste my time. However, you have to care about what others are posting. While I, foolishly it seems, care; it is not reciprocated. What a bummer. But, I shouldn’t have gotten my hopes up.
It wasn’t that I inferred having 500+ friends meant I would have 500+ views daily on a blog that has no merits, having been merely created haphazardly to begin with. I didn’t have these delusions of grandeur. All I asked for was maybe 20 to 30 page views per post. Pretty reasonable I would think. Pretty reasonable you would say. Consider this: since most of the people I know are on FB anyway, especially current people I communicate with and a great many friends from High School…there is a lot more than 50 of those people. Due to the weird ass ranking system for page views, posts, etc. that FB has adopted of late…I can easily blame it on them for not allowing my Constant Readers (yes, I appropriated the saying from Mr. King, as an homage, and as a good phrase for the readers I do nave and hope to have) to be able to see my linked posts.
That may be the other portion of it too. Most people have no issue with clicking a link to a video on YouTube or Ted or Vizeo, but can’t be bothered to click on a link where they might be required to read something…even after they have spent an hour or more reading their newsfeed on Facebook, commenting, etc. How dare I make them read! :-O the horror of it all!!
Enough of my stupid rant about people wasting their time productively …do what?! Sounds like military intelligence from the outside too, doesn’t it?
I figure if I put up enough of these posts…on the myriad of subjects I have interest in…that someone somewhere will take notice. That, or I will send out brown and black rats to spread it like, well, like the plague. Plus, if I post more than once a day, my other hope is to kickstart my creative energies, pump those neurons, massage that white brain tissue…and get more work done effectively.
So, a fair warning is probably advised: There will be a post or 3 or 10 that may not make much sense to you, may not be of interest to you, or may possibly offend you. If so, I recommend one of two things; 1) stop reading said post and wait for the next one. 2) stop reading altogether.
I would hope there are more Ones than Twos in the future. If we all read something that made us shudder, offended us, or cast a light on an otherwise heretofore shadowed portion of our reality…well we wouldn’t dynamically change as people now would we?

A lil bit for him, a lil bit for her…

So this week is interesting in the cultural sense of the word. By that, I mean movies and video games. I will take a quick look at what is in store for him and her this week. Very quick, as I don’t have much to say on either account, except that a happy couple can still exist after the week is done…we all hope.
* Tomorrow: 11/13/2012 is the launch day for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.
This will appease the him in most households. Guns, missions, bloodshed, and Zombies, oh my! Having never really played much of the first game, I have been urged strongly by my old Socom clan-mates to pick it up. Money being a rare commodity for me as of late, it went to my Amazon wish list instead. Now, before I get ripped to shreds for not being a real gamer, or not playing the first game (one of the most selling games ever); allow me to stress that I chose not to play for a few reasons.
-I have played FPS games since the first Wolfenstein on PC and of course the game that got most people onto FPS: Doom {and the sequels}. Don’t think that just because I haven’t played much of bOps, that I am a push over or a real gamer. I can dance around most, and hold my own in a game. Thank you very much. I chose not to play because 1) couldn’t justify the new game purchase. 2) when it came down, I no longer had a PS3 to play on. 3) cannot stand hackers, lag-switchers, or campers. They ruin most of any fun to be had playing Multiplayer.

That being said, while you have XBox fans foaming at the bit for Halo 4, you have most of the rest salivating for Black Ops 2. Me, I could care less, more because I can’t afford the game; and haven’t bought into the hype. If someone got me an early Christmas gift, I wouldn’t let it go to waste though. Oh, and although I have been bit by the Zombie bug (finally), why is it that Zombies get all the fuss. I guarantee that it would be a hell of a lot scarier having to take on Vampires and Werewolves. Especially werewolves…a pack of fast healing giant killing machines is much more shuddering to me than a horde of shambling zombies.

Friday: or Thursday night @ midnight if you will…
(And keeping to a monster theme) the final Twilight movie hits theaters. The epic ::cough:: tale of a sickly looking stoner chick, her disco-ball skinned blood sucking husband, their pet lycanthrope, Fido and a weird vampire/Dharmpire super baby, or something. I still haven’t read the books, but will get around to it after someone claims that Rice still writes better Vampire books, and can write a better love story on a napkin.
Ok, I am a little biased. Vampires aren’t supposed to sparkle in sunlight…they are supposed to burst into flames. End of story. I did see most of the first movie, something I am loathe to do when there are actually books that will always ne better than any movie: simply because your imagination doesn’t have to keep to a budget. When I saw him shimmering like a bad Bee Gees video, I was lost, threw up in my mouth, and instantly wanted 2 hours of my life back.
So, since every other being (under the age of 60) in the U.S. and possibly abroad with XX chromosomes will probably be giddy over this final chapter of movie-dom devoted to selling more swag to tweeners and tying in every feminine product possible to this movie franchise. {Twilight Douche…it works on so many levels :D} May we all live happily ever after…at least until Sunday when NFL games start.

This has been the Harbinger Owl of Syn reminding you that it doesn’t matter if you are Team Xbox, Team PS3, Team Jacob, or Team Edward…someone is vying for your money this week. It isn’t me, sadly. If I had my way, I would make some DLC for bOps 2: Twilight. Then I could fight against the werewolves I mentioned earlier, and show a vampire how to really sparkle…
…with a Phosphorous Grenade in his groin.
Dance that one off, dead boy!

~H.O.o.S. (gonna drive you home. Tonight)
